Are Robotic Lawn Mowers in Your Future?

Robotic lawn mowers are going to be the next life-style changing appliance in America. Think about it, how many times have you wanted to get away for the weekend or go to some event but yard work kept you tied to the house? I cant tell you how many golf outings I have missed.

Residential robotic lawn mowers run on batteries, so they dont use gas or oil. They are pretty much maintenance free except for the occasional replacement of the blades. They waterproof and they dont rust.Robotic lawn mowers can mow the yard, go back to the charger, and go back out again on their own without human intervention. This is a large step forward from only two or three years ago.A perimeter wire, like an invisible dog fence is placed around the yard to define the mowing area. Gardens, flowerbeds and trees can also be easily protected. Running the wire is not difficult, you can DIY or have it professionally installed. The wire can be buried up to 2 inches deep.Robotic lawn mowers are now useful and practical. They are still an oddity, so if you get one expect the neighbors to come from blocks around to watch it work. You can set the time for them to mow. Since they are quiet and dont need to see the yard, they can be allowed run at night while everyone is in the house or even asleep.Ensure that the robotic mower you are interested in goes back to the charger on its own the added expense will be worth it. A rain sensor is a must-have as well, some robotic mowers are heavy and can get stuck in soft areas. On schedule they will depart from the charger and start to mow. When they run over the wire or into an object they will turn and go another direction. Some mowers use a random pattern while others go back and forth. When the battery gets low they find the perimeter wire and follow it back to the charger. All robotic mowers on the market today do a very good job covering the yard and not leaving uncut patches.

How to Reduce Pollution Using a Robotic Lawn Mower

Even if you are not an environmentalist, the price of gas will definitely make you a conservationist. Gas prices continue to climb. Personally, going to the gas station with my little red gas can is not a trip of leisure, it has always been a chore.

By allowing the grass to get too high and then cutting it too low causes thatch. Thatch is that long dead cut grass that smothers the roots and prevents the morning dew from reaching the tender roots on top, it also acts like a blanket in the hot sun. By allowing the robotic lawnmowers to cut frequently only the very tips of the grass are cut. Since the clippings are very small they break down very rapidly and become a natural fertilizer. This means the need for less water and less application fertilizer, yet a much lusher and greener yard.Even as more cities are putting on water restrictions, lawn sprinkler companies are hard pressed to keep up with demand. During the driest times one only has to drive a few blocks in the early morning to get a free car wash. Even in a pouring rain sprinklers systems are going full tilt.It is common knowledge that gas powered lawn mowers are serious environmental polluters. It is estimated that 1 hour of lawn mower use equals driving an SUV 100 miles. I have read that lawnmowers contribute up to 5% of the nations pollution. Even more alarming comparisons and statistics can be found on the internet.Robotic lawn mowers can mow on a schedule and return to the charging base by them selves all season long without human intervention. This has two benefits, the most obvious is more time to do other things. The second is the less time people spend doing yard work the less money they are going to spend on their yards. Translation: fewer herbicides and pesticides equals less underground water contaminates.Robotic lawn mowers run on batteries, they burn no gas or oil. It is estimated that it costs only $7.00 a year in electricity to mow all season long. That is quite a savings!Due to higher quality components robotic lawn mowers built today have a life expectancy of about 10 years, the same as a quality riding lawn mower. So what can we do to keep our yards looking nice without doing harm to the environment? Robotic lawn mowers are one answer. In summary, robotic lawn mowers emit no pollution, are fully autonomous, and will dramatically reduce the need for watering and fertilizers while making your yard even more green and beautiful. Save the planet and save the sweat.

Can Robotic Lawnmowers Save the World or at Least You Money?

It is common knowledge that gas powered lawn mowers are serious environmental polluters. It is estimated that 1 hour of lawn mower use equals driving an SUV 100 miles. I have read that lawnmowers contribute up to 5% of the nations pollution. Even more alarming comparisons and statistics can be found on the internet.

It has exceeded out expectations. So much so we decided to start selling them. They have proven to be very low maintenance and highly reliable. They do a pretty good job cutting the yard.Robotic lawn mowers arent going to put John Deere or the local landscaper out of business anytime soon, but one day the do-it-yourselfers are going to be the ones that will be the neighborhood oddity.Even if you are not an environmentalist, the price of gas will definitely make you a conservationist. Gas prices continue to climb. Personally, going to the gas station with my little gas can is not a trip of leisure, it has always been a chore.Changing the oil, air filter, and regular maintenance is not what I consider an enjoyable event. John Deere charged me $129 one year to do all that, so it became a semi-annual day of bonding between me and ol JD.We hired a lawn service for a year. He did a good job but his helpers made us uneasy. They seemed friendly whether they could speak English or not. One of the problems we had was we travel a good deal and we just didnt feel comfortable having strangers running around our yard knowing we were gone. There are enough elements of risk out there without inviting it to our home. The biggest problem that we have is with our neighbors. My goodness they love to come out and watch it work. For me the excitement has long gone and I consider it no more of a novelty than the dishwasher. But for some reason our little robotic lawn mower continues to be the neighborhood star attraction day after day.Technology has advanced where batteries can now power lawn mowers to do an effective job. They can mow, go back to the charger by them selves, and go back out again on a schedule without any help all season. One day on the internet I came across an article for automatic lawnmowers. We ordered it with a healthy serving of skepticism since our robotic vacuum cleaner needed to be replaced more often that our landscapers hired hands. My wife and I can now travel freely without the worry of a self-inflicted burglary. We no longer have invited strangers running around our yard, yet we have a nicely cut lawn.Robotic lawn mowers are also very quiet. They are so quiet that they can be run at night while every one is asleep. It costs about $7.00 a year in electricity to mow my yard. I used to spend more than that in one trip to fill up the gas container.

Repower Equipment: Is your Lawn Mower Ready for Summer?

Summer is almost here. You can already smell fresh mowed grass of neighborhood laws and here the kids running through sprinklers. It is time for all of us to get geared up for the long mowing season ahead. With the price of fuel continuing to climb higher, an aging lawn mower engine that is declining in power or fuel efficiency may not be worth the time and energy to use this summer. Yet the cost of a new lawn mower or lawn tractor may not be in your budget this year. Plus, we hear every day about the importance of being green these days and tossing your old lawn mower into the trash heap is not in line with reducing waste and protecting the environment.

Advanced technology like, full pressure lubrication, hydraulic valve lifters, overhead valves, and fuel efficient powering4) Some people actually fill up with petrol whilst the engine is still running. The gremlins love this combination of heat, electricity, sparks and fumes. The chances of something going wrong are very high. Just image yourself with a singed moustache and eyebrows in the hospital waiting room, or more likely heavens waiting room. Turn off the engine before filling with petrol.5) Rotating lawn mower blades have the ability to pick up rocks and branches and launch them at you with devastating accuracy. Before you start mowing, give the lawn an inspection. Get rid of anything that is not green and made of grass. All the parts needed for installing the Toro repower kitBen Anton, 20076) Your lawn mower has the ability to blow up your shed, garage and even your house. If you are in the basement filling up with petrol, the fumes and gases will build up and just one little spark will send the whole lot sky high. Youll see it because youll be in heaven looking down on it! Only fill up with petrol in an open space. In the garden would be quite convenient as you are planning on mowing the lawn. Simple, routine maintenance of Toro repowered lawn mowers and lawn tractors. Who doesnt like the sound of that? Less time maintaining, more time mowing The support of a worldwide network of authorized dealers and distributors, for support where and when you need it.Here are the top ten reasons why lawn mowers always win.Repowering your lawn mower or lawn tractor using repower kits for equipment made by Toro, Cushman, or Jacobsen can be the best preparation you need for the upcoming long lawn or golf course mowing season. The kits made for Toro lawn mowers and Toro lawn tractors are perfect examples of how small engine repower kits work and benefit lawn equipment owners. Complete and understandable installation instructions for easy installing10) By now it should be obvious, but dont start working on the mower and making adjustments when the engine is running. Ten Ways People Hurt Themselves With A Lawn Mower

Its a nice sunny afternoon. You decide to mow your lawn. Then you find yourself in hospital. What happened? You had an argument with a lawn mower. Not only is it expensive and time consuming, its also very embarrassing. Imagine having to explain that a lawn mower got the better of you!

2 year manufacturers warranty on every repower kit7) Even when you are in the garden filling up with petrol there can still be a localised build up of combustible fumes. The gremlins will try and get you to light up a cigarette, just to see what you look like with burnt facial features. Dont smoke whilst filling up with petrol.1) You are wearing soft shoes, the lawn mower has strong metal rotating blades. What do you think will happen if the blades run over your unprotected feet?8) Ok, so you think that youve got the gremlins beat. Think again, they will now bring on kids, dogs and cats. Anything that can distract you and cause you to make a mistake. Mowing a lawn is not the time to be entertaining your kids or your friends kids. Just imagine taking a kid back to his parents and saying, Im sorry, but I could only find 2 of his fingers, you might be able to sew them back on. Mowing means no kids, no dogs and no cats. Let them enjoy the lawn after youve cut it. To spend much less money on dependable, Toro replacement parts and engines than you would spend purchasing them new9) Wait for the blades to fully stop on their own before clearing cut grass from them. The blades have the ability to slice your finger tips off without you even knowing. Ouch. The time to prep your lawn mower or lawn tractor, whether it is a Toro, Cushman or Jacobsen model, for the long summer mowing season is now. Small engine and engine repairs to lawn mowers and lawn tractors can extend the life and use of the mowers for many more years to come. Whether you are keeping your personal landscaping immaculate or caring for the quality of your community golf course, it is important to ensure that an aging mower does not become an unreliable fuel waster. The costs of lawn mower small engine repair and lawn tractor engine repairs can add up quickly if you are not careful about where you get your parts for making those repairs. Make sure you purchase parts from a reputable dealer and that those parts are high quality and dependable. Ask if your dealer has some sort of technical support as well so that if you have a question about the kit install or how your engine is working, you can get the answers easily and quickly.2) Working on the engine with the spark plug still in place. Whilst you are fiddling with the electrics the gremlins will conspire to kick the engine into life. Sliced! There goes another finger. Take the spark plug out when working on the engine.3) Switch off the engine before walking away from it. If you leave the lawn mower engine running, as soon as you turn your back it will start to follow you and run you over. Seriously, you must turn off the engine before leaving it. Whilst youre away an innocent child could try to take control of the mower.

10) By now it should be obvious, but dont start working on the mower and making adjustments when the engine is running. It will just instantly maim you. End of story.

Choosing The Right Type Of Mower For Your Lawn

You might believe that caring for your lawn is really a easy job but there is a great deal to consider. It is a very important aspect of home maintenance. Lawn care consists of cutting the grass every week, weeding the front of the home and removing the random pieces of trash on the property. This is something that you could do yourself or you could hire someone to take care of it for you.

This article was written to educate people that robotic mowers under intended circumstances are safe. There has been a great deal of thought and engineering involved to make robotic lawn mowers safe for public use. Most lawn care service companies pricing depends on a number of factors including plot size, intensity of work required and what area you live in. Usually you will find that most basic lawn maintenance for an average sized property will cost around $30 a week. If you can't afford this then you will want to look at investing in some lawn care equipment and other garden products. Two of the very best types of garden products to help maintain a healthy lawn are a garden lawn mower and fertilizers.Residential robotic lawn mowers require a perimeter wire similar to an electric dog fence to be laid prior to operating. Laying the wire is a one-time event that will last the life of the mower.Setting the perimeter wire is probably the scariest part of purchasing a robotic lawn mower. It is not difficult to stake the wire in place. It usually takes about 3 hours for 1,000 ft. of wire. The wire need not be buried as the grass and roots will grow over it in about 2-3 weeks.Robotic lawn mowers are now pretty much maintenance free. Changing the blade once a year and winter storage is about all the attention needed on a routine basis.

In the event you have a small budget then it could be much better to look at buying an electric lawnmower. Whilst they are cheaper to buy you will want to calculate how much it will cost you in power bills. In order to have a lawn mower that gives a good cut, then a petrol mower would be a better choice than an electric one but these can sometimes be more expensive.

Are Robotic Lawn Mowers Safe?

Youre standing in your front yard minding your own business when a robot with three razor sharp blades spinning at 5,800 rpm starts racing toward you. What do you do?

An excellent fertilizer that helps to promote grass growth and kills weeds is the best type to get. These usually contain chemical herbicides as well as synthetic fertilizers which will help to do the job. If you use these types of fertilizer properly then you can have a lovely, green front lawn. These mowers have so many safety features and shut-off triggers that it is amazing that they are actually functional. In the event you have a small budget then it could be much better to look at buying an electric lawnmower. Whilst they are cheaper to buy you will want to calculate how much it will cost you in power bills. In order to have a lawn mower that gives a good cut, then a petrol mower would be a better choice than an electric one but these can sometimes be more expensive.Operating the robotic lawn mower is simple, actually easier than programming a VCR. In theory, programming the mowing schedule need only be done at the beginning of the season. The LCD screens have full instructions and are easy to read.Robotic lawnmowers are now able to handle yards as small as 1/8 acre up to 5 acres. Depending on the model, they can handle slopes of up to 30 degrees. All major brands of robotic lawn mowers are waterproof and can remain outdoors all mowing season long.In addition to faster recharge times, lithium ion batteries do not have the memory problems associated with lead acid batteries. Basically the memory effect is caused when a battery is not fully discharged on a consistent basis, they remember the shortened life cycle, reducing the useful length of time until the need to recharge.Robotic lawn mowers can now mow on a time schedule and return to the charging base all season long without human intervention, this is the breakthrough that makes them truly useful.Light weight lithium ion batteries allow mowers to cut longer and recharge much faster. In fact some can recharge in as little as 4 hours allowing the mower to go out twice a day if needed. There are quite a number of internet sites that have detailed information about specific features of the different models of robotic lawn mowers. Hopefully this general description will give readers the interest to look into these new appliances. If the mower should cross the wire boundary it will immediately stop. So there is no need to worry about it running away or mowing the neighbors yard.

Improvements in Robotic Lawn Mowers

Robotic lawn mowers are creeping their way in to everyday American life. Like the dishwasher, they were really more trouble than they were worth in the beginning. But technological advances have made the robotic lawn mower practical.

It is a great idea to look at the various advantages and disadvantages of the various types of lawnmowers to ensure that you can make the very best decision for your house. Among the initial steps in the decision process really should be, looking at whether an electric mower or a petrol mower is going to be the right mower for you.An advanced feature on at least one model is the self-programmable mode. As these robotic lawn mowers work they determine the size of the yard and how fast the grass is growing, when they go back to their charging base they calculate the next time they need to come out to keep the grass at the optimal height. If you have a big area of grass that you need to mow then you might want to look at getting a ride on mower, in the event you do not then it's likely to be unnecessary, unless you have some sort of personal injury that prevents you from using a push lawn mower. For those who have a large area of lawn but your budget won't quite stretch to buy a ride on lawnmower, then you might want to look at choosing a used one, as you can find plenty of bargains. The Friendly Robotics Robomower turns the blades off at 16 degrees, not even high enough to get a hand under. Even if a small hand could get under, the blades are far back and recessed into a chamber in the body. It would take creativity, not stupidity, to get to the blades while they are still turning.Unlike push and riding lawn mower safety devices, robotic lawn mower features are not easily disabled. The tilt detection devices are soldered on to the main boards. Even the resistance against the blades and the ability of the software to stop them is measured in thousandths of seconds. The answer is nothing. It will just bounce off you and go another direction. Rather anti-climatic ending wasnt it? That is just the way the robotic lawn mower companies want it to be.Is this some kind of nightmare? No, youre awake and this is really happening, so once again, what do you do?Rain sensors are becoming standard equipment. When it starts to rain or the sprinkler system activates, they return to their charging base. Mowing in the rain was a major complaint for early adopters. The greatest concern most people have about robotic lawn mowers is safety. Bots with Blades just cant be safe. According to Ames Tiedeman, National Sales Manager for Systems Trading Corp., the US distributor for the Friendly Robotics Robomower, over 72,000 emergency room visits involved lawn mowers in 2005. ZERO involved robotic lawn mowers.Nearly everybody has used mowers at some stage in their life and they're a familiar sight during the summer time. A great lawn mower won't just mow the grass, it can help to mulch the cuttings and leave your lawn in a healthy state. They range in price from a couple hundred US Dollars to a few thousand US Dollars, depending on type, make and model. Despite this you will find truly only two main types of lawn mower, the type that you are able to ride or the sort that you push. There are other, more substantial lawn mowers but these tend to be used within the farming industry instead of in everyday homes.Since these robotic lawn mowers are designed to mulch there is no easy outlet for flying debris. Pebbles and pine cones do not get tossed very far and at low velocity. Some robotic lawn mowers have sonar detection systems that if any moving objects get close theyll slow down and at another point stop the blade before even being touched. All have some sort of touch sensors that when they lightly bump into a stationary object that they change direction. So actually getting run over is unlikely. Some robotic lawn mowers even have a wet grass detection system. Rain sensors are a step in the right direction, but it is the wet grass detection system that cures the problem. Heavy or long periods of rain can leave the grass wet and the ground soft for days. Heavier robotic lawn mowers could get stuck and dig trenches losing traction and spinning tires. Keeping bags of sand handy was just considered part of robotic lawn mower ownership.

There are quite a number of internet sites that have detailed information about specific features of the different models of robotic lawn mowers. Hopefully this general description will give readers the interest to look into these new appliances.

Robotic Lawn Mowers Keep Burglars Away

Most motor home owners are concerned about what they are coming home to, or rather what they might not be coming home to, after a long trip. We notify the neighbors, plug-in the timers on the lights and set the alarm system as we walk out the door. Our biggest concern was not our landscaper, but the people he hired to help.

Moe doesnt trim hedges and doesnt weed eat or edge, but it does a very good job keeping the yard cut. When we are going to be gone for any length of time we have a neighbor kid come over and weed eat. The hedges only need to be taken care of twice a year, so we do that ourselves.Know the type of Lawn Mower Blade You HaveThe lawn mower is an essential part of today household. With the prices of maintaining lawns increasing, it is necessary to know the details regarding blades so you can select the right one for you. Some of the commercial models have more than one blade and the areas on which they operate overlap so ensure complete mowing. The blades are 18 inches long; (maximum) and three blades may be employed to cut a pass width of 42 to 50 inches. Now if we can only get our neighbors to get one!Lets face it, most landscapers are not going to do a thorough criminal background check on their help. It was probably the weakest link in our home protection scheme, after all it is obvious when nobodys home. A few times seeing the RV and occupants missing is an invitation to the less scrupulous. We also hadnt noticed until recently, it is kind of nice when some one else is taking care of the yard, but there is a bit of stress as well. When strangers are in and around the house- whether we are home or not- just makes both of us a little bit nervous. The volume of the grass cut depends on which the speed with which the lawnmower is pulled and is generally low for the manual one. Some of the walk behinds have a motor up to 4 hp and are quite powerful.

Now if we can only get our neighbors to get one!

Lawn Mowers A simple invention that saves a great deal of time.

Invented in Gloucestershire, England around 1830 by freelance engineer Edwin Beard Budding (wikipedia), the lawn mower is an indispesable tool. The first lawn mowers were rotating blades pushed along on wheels, massively reducing the time that it took to cut large lawns with a scythe. Many decades later came the steam powered and eventaully the petrol driven lawn mowers.

The lawn mowers come in different varieties. Some are walk behind and some are motorized. The blades used in each type of lawn mower will vary. However, there are just two types of blades in the lawn mowersSharpening of the blades does not require great skills as the sharpness and speed works for an effective job. The sharpening can be done very quickly, but the balancing has to be done very carefully as the blades move at high speed and unbalanced blades can cause vibrations and operator discomfort.

An even more modern lawn mower is the ride on mower. This refers to a lawn mower incorporated into a small vehicle, shaped like a small tractor or sometimes more like a buggy. These are very popular for large areas as the user can sit back and ride the mower, steering it like a vehicle, cutting large portions of grass at a time. There are even people who race ride on mowers, dispensing with the bags and blades, and turning the machines into speedy little racers with their own leagues and classes. Finally a more rare type of lawn mower works on hover technology like a hovercraft, floating above the grass, able to be gently pushed around the garden with minimum effort.

Types of Lawn Mower

Lawn Mower Blade Types

The blades are arranged on a spiral on a cylinder and cut the grass by shearing action. The gap between the blade and the bed can be adjusted very easily and this is a great help to the operator.Today the lawn mower is an invaluable asset to a home or an estate or any groundskeeper - a machine that can cut down grass with one or two passes, to equal height, in a tiny fraction of the time it would take to do by shear or scythe. Lawn mowing is a typical part of suburban life and many people find it to be a relaxing and even therapeutic activity. Mowers are very popular with sports grounds and traditionally a gardener will mow up and down in order leaving a neat striped pattern in the grass. These larger grounds usually employ reel mowers which are a cleaner cut and are often pulled by a tractor.Modern garden mowers are powered by a petrol engine or by electricity. They use a rotating blade that chops the grass, which is then cast either onto the lawn or into a bag or bucket. Some mowers have several blades so that the grass is cut into such small pieces that they can be left on the lawn to naturally dissipate or act as fertiliser.Reel Type:: The first one is the rotary type that you find in walk behind lawn mowers . These are generally bigger and are visible from a distance. Reel blades operate against a stationary edge and any grass that comes within the rotary and fixed blade is cut by shearing action. The reel blades of the manual walk behind lawn mowers are generally 8 to 10 inches in diameter and are pushed by the person mowing the lawn.An even more modern lawn mower is the ride on mower. Finally a more rare type of lawn mower works on hover technology like a hovercraft, floating above the grass, able to be gently pushed around the garden with minimum effort.Blade type: This type of lawn mower blade is used in motorized lawn mowers where the operator can ride the lawn mower. The blade hovers over an area and is rotated at very high speed and the action is like that of a sword moving fast so that anything that comes in its way is cut instantly. We saw an advertisement for a robotic lawn mower on the internet and figured wed give it a try. It worked out better than we expected. In fact, it worked out so well I decided to start selling them. Like 80% of robotic lawn mower owners, we gave it a name, Moe.This way we have the best of both worlds, the yard is professionally being taking care of and you can hardly call Moe a stranger.Since it is a high-speed action, the grass in area is completely cut quickly and the mower can move rapidly over the entire area. This ensures high rates of cutting and is therefore useful for large areas. The grass is cut in just one pass and multiple passes as in the reel type of blades are rare.It has been more than six months since we set Moe loose in the yard and I still get almost daily reports of where it went and what it bumped into and the, I thought for sure it was going to.. If Nielsen started rating Moe itd probably rank above the Braves games in our neighborhood. Woe be the neighbor who missed a Moe outing! We hadnt missed the money we were paying the lawn service, but we noticed it when we stopped. It was like a nice little tax-free pay raise. It was so pleasurable that next year we are going to stop paying the mortgage. Here you can check more information about blades from different manufacturers http://www.lawn-mowers-and-garden-tractors.com/manufacturers.html

Spyder LB1200 Robot Lawn Mower Unpacked

Robot Lawn mowers have been around for sometime now, and this Spring of 2009 we will all witness the latest revelation in lawn mowing technology with the Spyder LB1200. Read through to find out why.

Higher end robot lawn mowers can detect how quickly your lawn is growing and will adjust its schedule to according to when the lawn needs to be mowed. This feature can be useful during droughts or fast growing seasons.Robotic lawn mower models differ in how long they take to recharge and how long they can mow before needing a charge. Charge times can vary from 2.5 hours to upward 24 hours depending on the model you choose. With recharge times in mind, remember that robotic lawnmowers will take longer to mow your yard than a human would. Therefore, if you have a large lawn, it could take a few consecutive runs to cover the whole area. Since the robot is doing all the work, consecutive runs are effortless on your part, but you want to choose a model that can keep your lawn looking its best without falling behind during peak growing seasons.Last but not least, it is important to buy from a dealer who is knowledgeable about robotic lawn mowers. An uninformed dealer can give poor advice, which could ultimately lead to your dissatisfaction with a robotic lawn mower.Bare in mind that this lawn mower does not have cliff sensors nor does it have a perimeter wire. If your property has a beautiful pond, creek, river or simply no obstacle to limit the mowers action, you might want to pass up on the Spyder LB1200 since it doesnt come with swim aids. You will find that other Lawnbott robot lawn mower models might better meet your needs.Another big deciding factor for which robotic lawn mower to buy is how it can handle hills. Some robot lawnmowers are designed to mow relatively flat lawns while others can be upgraded to handle steep hills. For example, the LawnBott LB3500 robotic lawn mower can mow hills up to 30 degrees with add on spiked wheels. This particular model utilizes an on board compass to keep it on course as it navigates hilly terrains.HONG KONG -- Johnson Electric today announced a high performance engine starter for heavy duty ride on lawn mowers. This new addition to the PowerPodTM product line is designed to achieve jam free starting and more cranks per battery charge. The PowerPod-HD starter eliminates jamming by deploying a unique Posi-Pinion™ technology and delivers high power in a compact package. http://www.johnsonelectric.comDo you have a hilly lawn or is it relatively flat? The Spyder LB1200 is definitely a great and efficient product for busy home owners looking for every way to be released from the house chores demon. At around 1 000$, the Spyder is a smart choice when looking at some of the traditional lawn mowers out there starting at 600-700$ to a few thousand dollars. Oh, and labour is not included!Run times for robotic lawn mowers can vary from 90 minutes to 7 hours before needing to recharge. Some higher end models like the LawnBott LB3550 can mow up to 15 hours per day with a recharge period in between. The Spyder LB1200 is closest to simplicity as youll ever get. There is no time consuming installation. No wires to install around the perimeter of your property, no programming, just shear lawn maintenance performance. It can manage slopes up to 27 degrees with its 4 wheel traction. The 18 pounds or a little over 8 kilos mower will perform on yards up to 5500 square feet.First of all, you should evaluate your lawn. Your yard does not have to be a perfect "postage stamp" lawn in order to get good results. In fact, most robotic lawn mowers are designed to manage odd shaped lawns and all different grass types. Robot lawn mowers can maneuver around obstacles like pools, trees, flower beds, poles, mailboxes and even playground equipment.Getting your yard ready for a robotic lawn mowerThe Spyder LB1200 doesnt require a perimeter wire. The mower relies on obstacles found on the property such as; rocks, trees, fences, concrete and asphalt, and others. The mower relies on specially patented sensors to manage the mowing action. Once the mower reaches a zone containing dry lawn or asphalt, it turns away and continues its course through uncut lawn. It will only cut your grass, nothing else!

Propane-fueled equipment, propane autogas vehicles can empower OPE dealers: increased sustainability, easy refueling resonate with commercial lawn care companies

Meeting customer needs has always been a prime focus for operators of commercial lawn and landscape companies. In recent years, customers have shown an increased interest in working with businesses that offer sustainable solutions. For this reason, operators are looking to equipment dealers for both guidance and products that meet that need.

For dealers, the answer may be propane-fueled commercial lawn mowers and equipment. Studies show propane-fueled mowers reduce greenhouse gas emissions by almost 50 percent compared with gasoline-fueled counterparts, and carbon monoxide emissions by more than 80 percent. Those low emissions mean work continues during pollution advisory periods when use of gasoline-fueled mowers is limited or prohibited. Plus, propane-fueled mowers meet or exceed all current U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emissions standards and, if sold in California, the more stringent California Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions standards.

When it comes to propane-fueled mowers, lawn care companies have plenty of options. Models are available from more than a dozen industry-leading manufacturers, allowing lawn and landscape company operators to quickly tap into their considerable sustainability and operational benefits and utilize the propane refueling infrastructure already in place. Operators can also consider propane-fueled handheld equipment such as string trimmers.

Propane-fueled commercial lawn care equipment

Also known as liquefied propane gas, LP-gas, or simply LP, propane is nontoxic, colorless, and virtually odorless; an identifying odor is added so the gas can be readily detected. Propane cylinders of varying capacities are mounted horizontally on propane-fueled mowers. Most cylinders are for vapor service only, and include a liquid prevention device (LPD) attached to the end of the vapor tube, along with an overfill prevention device (OPD).These cylinders are mower specific, even though they might look similar to propane cylinders used for forklifts. What makes them different is a left-hand connection and a specific collar that indicates mower use only, helping ensure commercial lawn and landscape companies use the proper equipment.

Two types of fuel systems are available for propane-fueled commercial mowers--liquid injection and vapor injection. Equipment dealers who understand the fuel service requirements of available models can assist commercial lawn and landscape company operators in identifying the mower and fuel system that best fits the needs of their fleet.

Many propane providers offer cylinder exchange programs to lawn and landscape companies. These programs usually include on-site installation of a cage to house cylinders. For larger volumes, a no-spill dispenser can be installed on site and used to refuel both mowers and vehicles like work trucks fueled by propane autogas.

Available equipment options

While some commercial lawn and landscape company operators are already asking questions about this growing trend, the opportunity to introduce many more operators to propane-fueled equipment exists for dealers. Either way, a dealer can position itself as an expert in this growing trend, and will reap the benefits when a purchase decision is made.

Following is a brief overview of propane-fueled mowers, many of which are featured on pages 28-29. Keep in mind, this list is just a start--contact manufacturers to gather further details about their full line of propane-fueled mowers or visit www.poweredbypropane.org for more information.

* Ariens/Gravely: The Gravely Pro-Master XDZ 260H LP zero-turn mower features a 28-hp./992-cc Generac air-cooled V-Twin engine and uses twin 33.5-pound LP tanks.

* Cub Cadet Commercial: The TANK SLP zero-turn mower utilizes an 852-cc or 999-cc Kawasaki engine powered by liquid propane.

* Dixie Chopper: The Xcaliber Propane zero-turn mower is fueled by two 40-pound propane cylinders and a 990-cc Generac LP engine.

* Exmark: The Lazer Z Advantage Series zero-turn mower is powered by a 28-hp. Kawasaki V-Twin engine. Also available are the Turf Tracer and Turf Tracer HP propane-fueled walk-behind mowers.

* Ferris: The IS 3100ZP zero-turn mower features an 895-cc Briggs & Stratton Vanguard Big Block V-Twin engine with vapor-draw fuel tanks.

* Husqvarna: The PZ6029PFX zero-turn mower uses a Kawasaki FX Series 29-hp./852-cc engine. Optional 33-pound tanks hold about 14 gallons of propane, allowing all-day operation.

* Scag Power Equipment: The zero-turn Dual-Fuel Turf Tiger is a dual-fuel powered commercial mower, offering both liquid propane fuel and gasoline operation. An optional propane-only conversion kit allows it to conform to local regulations, while the mower is also available with a Kohler propane-specific engine.

* Schiller Grounds Care: The BOBCAT Predator-Pro LP zero-turn mower uses a 30-hp. Generac engine designed to take advantage of propane's higher octane level.

* Snapper Pro: The S200xp zero-turn mower features an 895-cc Briggs & Stratton Vanguard Big Block V-Twin engine, offering up to 30-percent reduced emissions.

* Zipper Mower: The front-mount Model STS-28LP uses a Kawasaki 28-hp. air-cooled OHV engine.

In addition to those mowers, propane-fueled handheld equipment is also available. For example, propane-fueled string trimmers produce no evaporative emissions or ozone-depleting hydrocarbons.

Fleet trucks fueled by propane autogas

Propane autogas is the leading alternative fuel in the United States and the nation's third most common vehicle fuel, after gasoline and diesel. In fact, according to the Energy Department, there are more than 270,000 on-road vehicles running on propane autogas across the United States, including buses, taxis, delivery vehicles, and other fleet vehicles. That provides an emissions reduction opportunity for equipment dealers that utilize a fleet of work trucks for pickups, deliveries and other uses. Fleet vehicles fueled by propane autogas emit 12-percent less carbon dioxide, about 20-percent less nitrogen oxide, and up to 60-percent less carbon monoxide than gasoline-powered vehicles. Plus, propane autogas burns cleaner in engines than gasoline and diesel, which results in longer engine life and reduced maintenance costs.

Purchasing brand-new work trucks fueled by propane autogas to replace existing conventionally fueled fleet vehicles is one approach that makes sense for fleet managers, since a variety of models from multiple manufacturers are available. Another approach is converting existing conventionally fueled fleet vehicles. Keep in mind that propane autogas aftermarket systems must meet federally imposed standards and be certified with the U.S. EPA. There are multiple aftermarket systems that meet these requirements and are available in a variety of vehicle makes and models, and installation should be performed by a trained mechanic to ensure the system is in proper working order. For more information about fleet trucks fueled by propane autogas, visit www.powe.redbypropane.org.

Becoming a resource

Information is power. An equipment dealer's knowledge of the wide variety of propane-fueled lawn care equipment currently available will offer valuable resources for commercial lawn and landscape company operators. In addition, share information about local propane providers' cylinder exchange programs.

Ultimately, the trend toward propane-fueled equipment allows a dealer to be viewed as a resource. That can pay dividends both today and well into the future, as relationships with commercial lawn and landscape companies grow.

AT A GLANCE

Propane-fueled equipment basics

* Propane-fueled commercial lawn mowers are available from more than a dozen industry-leading manufacturers.

* Propane-fueled mowers reduce greenhouse gas emissions by almost 50 percent compared with gasoline-fueled counterparts, and carbon monoxide emissions by more than 80 percent.

* Availability of on-site refueling and propane cylinder exchange programs makes refueling easy for commercial lawn and landscape companies.
